Defining Your Target Audience
When you’re starting a business, chances are you have product or service that has a level of demand. There are people that need what you’re selling. These people are your target audience. In order to define who target audience, you need to understand and create who your ideal client is. This will allow you to better market towards them and create products/services that benefit them. So, do you know what your target audience is? Or, how to define them? Let’s figure it out together…
A few things to get you started:
Put yourself in your ideal client’s shoes
You can have more than one ideal client type
You don’t need to take guesses; consider your current clientele and test your assumptions by chatting with them or sending out a survey
Focus in on the commonalities of your ideal clients - not the differences
Think about what the perfect client would look like, but don’t get too narrow focused
Now, create them…
Demographics
Think about age, gender performance, relationship status, number of children (if any), neighbourhood, income, occupation. What are their views and values?
Client Desires
Your clients are coming to you because they have a problem, desire or a goal. And, they need you to help them. Your goal is to make sure that your content and services/products are helping them to accomplish goals, solve problems or fulfill desires.
What’s their goal? When you ask “what made you reach out?” what’s their answer? What’s their problem? Is it emotional, physical? What do they desire? Desires are usually based in social status. What has driven them to you?
How Can You Help?
It’s important that any content that you create or any product/service that your business provides, has this target audience in mind. Right now, how are you helping these clients? Can you make improvements to better suit their needs?
