Instagram Formats & Their Purpose

Okay, okay. Believe it or not, there's actually some purpose to this social media madness. So, it’s important that you are posting with purpose and using the proper format for the message that you’re conveying. When I first started out with my business, I was such a static poster. Static, meaning single image posts. Then, I got a little more creative and started creating educational content through carousels. And then... I finally took the leap and made reels. Reels were always really intimidating. I had to let go of my ego a wee bit. Now, I love making reels and have started challenging myself to create original audio reels where I’m actually chatting to you.

If haven’t gotten into making reels yet, I get it. I’ve been there. But, you're missing out on a great way to reach further to your audience reach and, in turn, grow your account.

Don't feel embarrassed - people expect your first reels to be terrible. We've all been there. Just keep trying.

Of course, I try my best to be active on stories (they’re the best place to sell to your audience). But, the one platform I’m lacking in, is going live. UGH, I just can’t make myself do it. I'm just too too shy for it just yet - I'll get there.

So, what about you? Where are you at with it? Here’s a breakdown of each format and their purposes…

STORIES

Stories are great conversation starters and selling points. The easiest place to sell, is in your DMs. Share authentic, genuine and spontaneous content that humanizes you and the business. Post stories with the purpose of converting your followers to customers.

REELS

Reels are great for raising your brand awareness. Reach more accounts and grow your own. Reels as a format allow you to get your content out to a wider audience. Post reels that introduce you and the brand, makes you relatable, educates your potential customers or increases engagement.

IG LIVES

Going live humanizes the brand and increases your authenticity. They also allow you to have conversations with your audience in real time which will also build your credibility.

CAROUSELS

Carousels are the best format for producing educational content that will inspire your followers. Next to stories, they can also be one of the best platforms to converts followers to customers. With the right CTAs, you can promote conversation, boost your engagement and grow your account.

STATIC/SINGLE IMAGES

Static posts are very similar to carousels. They can also educate and inspire your followers while promoting conversation and engagement. And, again, with the right CTAs, you can definitely convert your followers to customers. A single image could be a better choice for a quick update/promotion or aesthetic building post.

PAID ADS/BOOSTS

The other formats need your existing audience to engage with them before the algorithm will push your content to a greater reach. If there is something specific you need to promote, paid ads is the best way to ensure you’re increasing your reach and audience. Boosting your posts will build brand awareness and convert a general audience to either followers or customers.
